Where it all began…
It’s 1986. Big hair and big shoulder pads are in. Billy Ocean is number one in the charts. Back to the Future is playing at the cinema. On a cold Friday in February, in a village near Stroud, the world of heavy duty shelving is about to change forever.
Forty years ago, bigger was definitely better. But big shelving systems were clunky and bolt-heavy, assembly was slow, and “heavy duty” didn’t always live up to its name. The storage market needed a radical change and, on 21 February 1986, it got one.
Rapid 1 heavy duty shelving—the original and still the best
When we launched Rapid 1 it wasn’t just a game changer, it was a revolution. The first boltless system of its kind, it delivered a blend of strength and simplicity never before seen. No fiddly fixings. No wasted time. Just strong, interlocking rivet design making assembly quicker, easier and far more efficient.
And it was all available by mail order—the closest thing the 80s had to online shopping. Rapid Racking gave busy customers exactly what they needed. Businesses around the UK took notice… and never looked back.
Forty years strong (literally)
Going strong after 40 years, it’s not just our ‘customer-first’ ethos that hasn’t changed. The Rapid 1 shelving of today barely differs from its original design. Because when something works this well, you stick with it.

From the beginning it wasn’t just our brilliant products that set us apart, but how quickly we got them to you. In 1986, we pioneered mail order shelving in the UK, delivering quick-assemble storage straight to your door. No hold ups, no hassle.
Being this quick meant having everything in stock, ready to go. And that meant moving to an airfield…
A home big enough to hold us
Four years after launching, we moved from Woodchester to bigger premises in Nailsworth. But by 1998 our growing business needed something much bigger. That’s when we made our home on Kemble Airfield on the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire border, and we’ve soared there ever since 🛩️
Our iconic ex-MOD hangars were built in 1939, with the largest now listed for its stunning bowstring truss roof. Within these historic walls, we house over 15,000 square feet of stock and storage expertise. So when you’re ready to transform your workspace, we’re ready to deliver—fast. Orders over £1000 even get free delivery to mainland England and Wales.
